I usually wouldn't go further than this, drawing with a ballpoint pen. There's too high a risk of overdoing the whole thing and ruining everything you've sketched out so far. I figure I should take a look at some of Tove Jansson's illustrations for guiding insight before going any further; funny that I just happened to give away all my drawing books this Christmas to my little sister. No worries, however.

At the moment, there isn't much more I need than a giant floor pillow, a warm blanket, a pen and paper, a pile of sweet tangerines, maybe a bit of some full-flavoured dark chocolate and loads of Stone Roses. And, of course, some Ryan Adams, too, for some variation.
